admitted to knowing about a plot to poison the president. City Press has learnt from four well-placed sources – both in law-enforcement and in Zuma family circles – that President Jacob Zuma’s estranged wife, known as MaNtuli, will “soon” be charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
The authorities are still on the trail of her alleged accomplices, which City Press has learnt includes a flamboyant KwaZulu-Natal businessman. Three of the four sources confirmed that other local and foreign individuals are also on the radar of investigators.
A docket is now believed to be with the National Prosecuting Authority and is being dealt with by senior prosecutors. Law-enforcement sources told City Press that MaNtuli has also made a statement to investigators and her affidavit contains “some very interesting names”.“This thing (plot) was big,” said a source familiar with the investigation.

Oyo Election Petition: Ladoja, Ajimobi set to present witnesses

The Governorship Candidate of Accord Party in Oyo State, Sen. Rashidi Ladoja, and the state governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, have been slated to present 202 and 150 witnesses respectively at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ibadan, the state capital. Ladoja is challenging the victory of Ajimobi in the April 11 governorship

election in the state. At yesterday’s hearing, Olumuyiwa Aduroja and Babatunde Aiku, both SANs, held brief for Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) for the first and second respondents respectively. For the petitioners (Senator Ladoja and Accord), their counsel, Richard Ogunwole (SAN), informed that his team was prepared to present 202 witnesses within 14 days as permitted by the law, while the first and second respondents told the Tribunal that they are ready to present “about 150 and 141 witnesses” respectively also within the statutory10 days permitted by the law.
For third and fourth respondents (Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Rufus Akeju and INEC), their counsel, Adeboye Sobanjo, informed the tribunal that they will be presenting 160. witnesses also within the statutory 10 days. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Aliyu Mayaki, after its sitting on Saturday, adjourned proceedings till Tuesday, August 4, 2015, informing that the pre-hearing session will also be extended by one week.
The tribunal also granted first and second respondents five days each to file their report on documents in respect of the petitioners’ report from inspection of electoral materials earlier inspected.

Yoruba Does Not Have A Leader – Obasanjo

Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the South-west region does not have a single individual who can be regarded as their leader .

Obasanjo’s opinion was written this in his book, titled, “My Watch: Political and Public Affairs,” where he wrote about, in his own words, “Nigerianness and Yorubanness.”
In chapter 31 of the book titled, “Campaigns and Elections,” Obasanjo opined that Nigeria did not need tribal barons as leaders, adding that there was nothing like Yoruba leadership in the South-west region. Obasanjo wrote, “Just as there was no single oba having sovereignty over the whole of Yorubaland, there was no individual as leader of the Yorubas in Yorubaland. As it was then, it remains till now.” According to him, even among the Yoruba obas “there is equality, but mutual respect.” adding that, “no crown is subordinate to another.”
Recalling history, Obasanjo said, in the past, obas never saw one another, but sent messages to each other through emissaries. He further revealed that it was the colonialists that made the obas to see one another face-to-face and went further to rank Yoruba traditional rulers.
“The Yorubas did not have such a clear-cut and accepted hierarchy. Every oba maintains sovereignty over his domain,‘baales’ (chiefs) were appointed by obas within their domains,” he added.
According to Punch, he also wrote that the supporters of the first Premier of the Western Region, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, “fixed” the title of Yoruba leader on him during the civil war.
According to him, Awolowo presided over the meeting of the Yorubas in Ibadan. “In the course (of the meeting), Chief Awolowo presided. His supporters then fixed the title of Yoruba leader upon him,” he stated.
He also said that some people, including Chief Adisa Akinloye, did not accept Awolowo as the leader of the Yoruba, saying after he contributed to the end of the civil war, some people began to extol his “Yorubanness.”
“I did not encourage this. ‘My Yorubaness’ and ‘my Nigerianness’ must go pari passu, and one must not stand in the way of the other,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Obasanjo recently recommended a way forward for Buhari’s administration in governing what he termed, “a new Nigeria.”

Fire Razes INEC Office

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia, was Yesterday morning, aug2,  razed by fire.

According to News Agency of Nigeria’s (NAN) reports, the fire destroyed documents, furniture and other valuables in the office leaving only the wall of the building and remains of materials made of steel. A witness, Chinyere Akwarandu, an official of the local government council said a corps member alerted him of the fire at 11 a.m. Akwarandu said the NYSC member serving with the INEC reported that the building was on fire.
On arrival at the scene, efforts were made to put out the fire but the force of the inferno later prompted them to attempt to prevent it from extending to other buildings in the council secretariat.
”We tried what we could to stop it but it was too fierce for us. Earlier, we had called the fire service but they told us they had no diesel to drive their truck,” the witness said.
NAN reported that Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia was among the early visitors to the council secretariat to assess the extent of damage.

Forged Senate Elections: Inspector-General Of Nigerian Police To AppearBefore Court

Solomon Arase, the inspector-general of the Nigerian police, has been ordered to appear on Thursday before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in connection with the investigation of the alleged forgery of

the 2015 Standing Order of the Senate.
In his ex parte application, Gilbert Nnaji, the senator representing Enugu east senatorial district, sought to restrain the IGP and the attorney-general of the federation, who are the two respondents to the suit, from taking further steps on the investigation of the alleged forgery.
Justice Gabriel Kolawole held that he could not grant the restraining order at the level of ex parte hearing,since it was the same issue the plaintiff canvassed in their substantive suit. He held that, before the the decision on the ex parte are made, the IG and the AGF must appear in court to give their reasons why the prayers sought by the plaintiff should not be granted.
“The court is a bit wary on an ex parte proceeding to allow the plaintiff [Nnaji] to have his day in court
because the courts are not created or established to supervise the National Assembly in the way and manner it will run its own constitutional duties, except where its acts border on a substantial infraction of the constitution, which goes beyond its own internal rules or procedure, or the application of its standing order,” Justice Kolawole said.
“To do otherwise is to work to subvert the hallowed constitutional principles of separation of powers upon which the machinery of government is proposed to be run and to be operated.
“My decision is not to make orders directing both parties to maintain status quo as it is often misinterpreted by both parties. Rather, I will direct that the defendants, who had already been served with the originating summons, and the plaintiff’s motion of notice, shall on the return date, show cause why the orders being sought by the plaintiff on his motion ex parte dated and filed on 23-07-15, shall not be granted.”
The judge also holds the involvement of the police, which is an agency of the executive arm of government, in the forgery case (by inviting for questioning, certain members of the Senate) as worrisome.
Last Sunday, reports emerged of the police probe into the forged Standing Order of the Senate , confirming that the standing rules used to inaugurate the eighth Assembly and elect Senate president
Senator Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, were forged.
Ekweremadu is representing Enugu-West, while Nnaji, the plaintiff, is from Enugu-East.

Nigerian Army To Review Cases Of Detained, Dismissed, SentencedSoldiers

The Nigerian army is to review the cases of soldiers dismissed from service over cowardice, insubordination, mutiny, and related allegations.

The Punch reports that the process of revisiting cases against military officers and soldiers previously involved in the ongoing operations against the Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east has been initiated by the new chief of staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai.
Buratai, according to The Punch sources, had dissolved the active general military courts-martial in Nigeria and constituted a committee to review the cases of soldiers either convicted or still facing trial before the courts-martial in Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja.
“I think the directive involved those dismissed without trial in their various formations, those tried and dismissed and those still facing trial,” said The Punch’s anonymous source.
A number of the soldiers might be given a second opportunity to continue their careers in the military after being detained, sentenced or dismissed. They are to undergo a short retraining exercise and report at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, for the screening exercise.
The committee is expected to start its activities on August 7 and sit for 25 days.
Colonel Sani Umar, acting director of public relations of the Nigerian army, said they were reviewing “all recent disciplinary cases due to a wave of litigation by some aggrieved personnel,” adding, however, that the directive does not mean a total recall of dismissed and deserting soldiers.
Buratai was appointed chief of army staff by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 13. He has made significant changes within the ranks of the Nigerian army.

Shema Left N42 Billion Debt, Empty Treasury – Katsina Governor Masari

Aminu Bello Masari, governor of Katsina state, continues insisting he “inherited” a debt of N42 billion and an empty treasury from the previous administration.

Speaking yesterday in Kafur at a reception organised in his honour, Governor Masari gave some details of the alleged economic misdemeanours of his predecessor, Ibrahim Shema-led government.
“In two years, five months, the sum of N11 billion was stolen from the coffers of local governments,” Governor Masari said, adding the sum included N6.2 billion as gratuity for local government staff, and N3.2 billion for state civil servants.
John Oyegun, national chairman of the APC, also spoke briefly on the Shema-led cabinet: “We know the level of thievery and misgovernance that took place in Katsina state, but salvation is here as Governor Masari will salvage the state”.
Masari vowed to make sure his administration fulfils the campaign promises: to restore the lost glory of the state and focus solely on peoples’ needs. He said he had ordered visits to all primary schools and health centres be made to assess their real condition, and arranged for 60 women and 40 men from each of the political ward in the state to be empowered as part of an aggressive economic empowerment program.
In late June, Governor Masari quoted the preliminary report of the transition committee as having revealed close N13 billion shortfall in Federation Allocations, N6.2 debt to pensioners at the local government levels,
N15 billion in foreign debt, misappropriation of close to N7 billion belonging to local government councils, N7.1 billion of SURE- P funds, and misappropriation of SUBEB funds.
Several officials of the past government have appeared before the EFCC to answer questions pertaining to their roles in Shema’s office.
However, ex-governor Ibrahim Shema dismissed the allegations as false, aimed at tarnishing his hard- earned reputation. He insists that his administration did not borrow and, therefore, left no debt for the new administration to settle. He announced that, instead, he left N3.7 billion in government coffers.

First Lady donates drugs and food to Emir's HIV/AIDS Trust Fund

Positive and drug addicts in Zuru emirate of Kebbi state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that donation was presented in Zuru to Sani HIV/AIDS Trust Fund, a Non
Governmental Organisation (NGO) established by the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sani Gomo II .
Atiku told the Emir that the donation was to reduce hardship faced by the victims, make them have a sense of belonging, as
well as erase the pain of stigma.
She pledged to sustain her support to the victims and other under privileged members of the society, calling on other
privileged persons to do same.
In his remarks, the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sani Gomo II, commended the donor and called on other members of the public to emulate her by providing employment, material and financial support to the victims.
He said the NGO would not relent in its campaign aimed at controlling the spread of HIV, especially among rural dwellers.

President Buhari Releases N5billion For The Victims Of Boko Haram Attacks

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly instructed the Head of Service of the Federation, Danladi Kifasi, to facilitate the immediate release of N5 billion for the victims of Boko Haram attacks.
The N5 billion for release was pledged by the Federal Government in August of 2014 for the Victims Support Fund (VSF) during a fund-raiser.
President Buhari was said to have given the directive after receiving a briefing from the VSF Presidential Committee headed by former defence minister, Theophilus Danjuma, at the Presidential Villa. Danjuma reportedly informed Buhari that out of the N55.92 billion pledged at the fund-raising dinner for the fund in
August 2014, about N33.54 billion was yet to be redeemed.The Victims Support Fund currently stands at N23.33 billion and are situated in four bank accounts.
